i’m never sure if it’s the designer or the style critic in me, maybe a combination of the two, but inevitably, i never find what i’m looking for to wear to events. this time around, i shopped all sorts of places- online, in-store, expensive, inexpensive, close-out, just-in… and still, didn’t see anything i’d consider.
it doesn’t help that i can see in my head exactly what i want. i’ve been consuming mad men, and joanie’s style has been calling. i have several vintage dresses that fit like a glove- my shape is now being defined as mid-century. and so, of course, last minute, i decide to make something. inspiration: chanel, mad men. timeline: 3 days. here’s what i came up with. to see all photos, click
the top half starts shaping up, that stand-up collar was just what i wanted
the two halves before i joined them…
almost done, just the armhole finishing and hem are left.
me, the dress and doug from bellevue nordstrom. thanks to jen for the photo!

Kam! The dress turned out awesome and you look fabulous as always! Love it! Especially the collar. When are you going to start taking special orders?
ha ha special orders… that’s funny.
that would require a) time, and b) planning ahead. and elves. i need to get some elves.
She’s right. I desperately need you to make me a few dresses for Fall and then help me pick the hosiery and shoes to go with…and i am dead.serious.
do you have a sewing machine? what if i help you pick stuff out to make a dress? or shopping, i can always be talked into shopping… i’ll help!
So elegant! And yes, totally channeling Mad Men. All you need is a cigarette and a martini glass in hand. You are helping to get me back to my sewing projects that have been languishing for months. I needed a kick in the pants – this is it!
sewing projects! i have a stack. good thing i only pick the last minute ones to finish. what’s on the docket to make???
