naturally 7, seattle key arena,
From needle+thread

naturally 7 opened for michael buble’ and they were AMAZING! i’m so excited to be turned on to this band… after going a little nuts over ‘straight no chaser’ this past christmas, these guys are a perfect addition to my a cappella collection (and not to play favourites, but better). be sure to click read more for more photos of their style and a video of them performing! michael buble’ – key arena – queen anne

michael buble, key arena, seattle music scene
From needle+thread

this past weekend was what i’ll call ‘music laden‘. i consider my music tastes to be diverse, but hadn’t pondered much what that could mean. a cappella, swing band, arena rock, folk acoustic- i seriously experienced the gamut, and came away with at least one of the best concerts i’ve seen this year (muse) and a new band to start following (naturally 7). one of the oddest moments was sitting at michael buble’, turning to my music-partner-in-crime and saying ‘didn’t muse play this last night?’. when michael buble’ and muse share a music connection (and venue, i guess) it leads to some interesting hypothetical musical match-ups (in case you’re wondering- the song was ‘feelin good’- both performances were stellar).

buble’ was engagingly frank, goofish-ly funny, (did i mention cute?) and although i only own his christmas album (so far) his live performance has propelled me to start perusing his catalog for must haves.  i’ve loved harry connick jr. since high school- they’re similar, although i personally find buble’s style and voice more fitting to the swing style classics.  for those who don’t like that he’s ‘ripping off’ sinatra, prima, darrin or martin, skip those and check out his original material.  songs like ‘home’, ‘everything’ and ‘haven’t met you yet‘ exceed his covers… sensitive, engaging and sweet, his voice is easy to listen to, and the melodies instantly catchy.  buble’s live show was upbeat, and bordering on baring-soul sensitive.  he talked of seattle being like a second home (hailing from vancouver), had loads of family in the audience, brought up a nephew (near 5-ish in age?) who he questioned about favored musical tastes and got the witty reply of ‘the jonas brothers‘, and then dedicated ‘georgia on my mind’ to his hard working grandpa (also in the audience) who helped him get his start.

michael’s crazy love tour is sponsored by local retail giant, nordstrom.  what better endorsement for looking sharp menswear, than a boyishly handsome man rocking a classic, slim suit while crooning to an arena full of adoring women?  smart, nordstrom… very smart.  thanks to after dark for having me, and for a list of michael’s upcoming tour dates- click here.  if you want to see all the photos, be sure to click Read more

do this now – prairie home companion – seattle

prairie home companion seattle 2010 garrison keillor
From needle+thread

prairie home companion has been on my list of shows that are a ‘must see’ for a while.  this last saturday i was fortunate enough to go take pictures for after dark on the p-i. if you’ve ever caught a snippet of the show on npr, been lulled into a realm of america that seems to exist only in our imaginations (or history), you’ve heard garrison talk about lake woebegone.

fortunately, tickets for next week’s performance are still available. prepare to be entertained, and laugh at your perfectly summed up seattle self, as described/sung/crooned by mr. keillor himself. Read more

musical style – suzanne vega – the moore – downtown seattle

From needle+thread

i’ve been lucky recently to take my camera places i don’t normally get to (begging works!).

tonight i went to see a great show, at a gem of a venue in seattle (neko case, travis, snow patrol, keane have all played amazing shows there) the moore- playing tonight- suzanne vega.

it’s touching to get a glimpse of where songs you love have come from- gypsy (such a gorgeous song) written at the age of 18 for a summer love.  caramel… a song you hear and can’t help the urge of taking a naughty bite of something (or someone) is about just that… wanting something you can’t have.

singer style – kristen – south downtown – seattle

From needle+thread

it’s hard to fall in love with celebrity style. someone else is dressing them anyway… maybe if i could see how those people dress? i’ve found it to be easier to fall in love with the style of women musicians, and recently had the opportunity to meet one. there’s something to be said for getting an up close look of what ‘on the road‘ means, and a guarantee you, it doesn’t involve a lot of closet space.   kristen of vedera spared an hour of her time in seattle to talk with me about her personal style. to see our interview- needleplusthread on the seattle post intelligencer.

i also got a chance to hear vedera perform and was impressed.  similar in feel to eisley (but not as… sad? gloomy?) i loved kristen’s voice live.  this free download of their new single satisfy from their newly released album just might hook you.

seattle art museum – SAM Remix

From needle+thread

when i showed up at the last one of these parties… i think it was august…  i was setting my expectations low.  i was late.  i almost didn’t go.  i took the bus with my friend jennie, and i think we almost bagged and went drinking somewhere… but when we got there… it was like we showed up at a party in another city.  people were dressed up.  there were so many people, lines for drinks weren’t that long… and since it was at the sculpture park, and the end of summer… you could mill, dance, mingle at your own speed.  it was a really fun night.

so when this one came round, i was ready.  i knew.  and when i got there… it did not disappoint.  a great mix of young and old, drinks+snacks, AMAZING beats by one of the best dj’s i’ve heard in a while… tigerbeat (tigerbeat206 on twitter) and people who brought it when it came to style.

SAM is not the best museum i’ve been to in my life, but by far it’s the closest to my heart… and there are worse things you could do than turn a museum into a night club every couple of months and get the people milling around, dancing and appreciating art.  add it to your list of events… you won’t be disappointed.

rocker style – snow patrol – paramount theater

From needle+thread
From needle+thread

snow patrol is one of my favourite bands, and i do love the way gary lightbody dresses.  it’s kind of a bohemian/rocker style, and it fits his lanky body… i was sad snow patrol’s management couldn’t accommodate some up close pictures, but maybe next time.  here’s one of the paramount (pre-sign lighting) and then the band themselves.

department of energy style – bumbershoot

From needle+thread

From needle+thread

my friend’s husband (ok, HE’S my friend now too) is in department of energy. they’re good. and i truly enjoyed hearing them at the sky church. i also slaved over appropriate band wear for their daughter FOREVER. i’m kidding, it took me ten minutes and i was *ahem* tipsy… but isn’t it cute ? anything is cute that size. especially those pink, hello kitty wellies…

all american reject style – bumbershoot

From needle+thread

From needle+thread

it’s sad that the way i know these guys is because ‘dirty little secret’ is the only song on rockband i can beat my husband at. love the pants.

rocker style – calvin + caleb – bumbershoot

From needle+thread

these guys are in a band called tyler bryant band. i figured it was something, but had to ask the 12 year old girl sitting next to me. they were hanging with rock photographer bob knight… which makes sense, cause it looks like rock prophecies is all about their lead singer… i really like his car shoes. and you know how i feel about chucks.

i kissed a girl style – katy – bumbershoot

From needle+thread

retro bathing suit AND tulle peplum. not a look everyone can pull off. well played katy perry…

black + black – cake – bumbershoot

From needle+thread

this is cake. he’s in the band dry season. i liked the color of his mohawk. and his choice to keep it simple while rocking.
