Tag aren’t you in a band

well, hello stranger… and guided by voices

holy cow.  somewhere i’ve lost a few months of my life.  it’s been… occupying.  this pregnancy thing, it’s a doozy.  i’d take the photos, and then not have the energy to do anything with them.  never mind that my studio was in the basement.  now that we’ve rearranged, and *ahem* sloooooowwwwly started getting some of this house in order (baby room? not quite), i’m ready to finally get some posts together.

i think for the duration of the weeks i have left (that would be 8, god willing), i may just post things i find interesting.  it’s hard for me to take photos, and honestly, hard to carry around the extra weight of the camera.  i miss my camera.  i miss being able to get low to take a photo, and now that i’m being honest, miss being able to get up on my own from getting low.  you get the gist.  enjoy some of these older shots, and in the meantime, i’ll be working on getting some inspiration posts together.  it may not be seattle street style, but i’ll do my best.

coastal style – seely brothers – bainbridge island

i receive hundreds of PR emails a week.  at first… i enjoyed them.  now… they’re getting a little tedious.  only once in a while, does one strike me, and i think… yes, this is something i would actually feature.  half the time, i wonder if they’ve even looked at the site.  i do only post seattle specific content.  i really only like to post photos.  and i doubt you, dear reader, could care less about which celebrity is wearing what earring, or weather new shops open in vegas.  hardly relevent to us.  and on behalf of you (and my sanity) i delete.

but yesterday i received an email about a campaign that nautica is doing, and they’re featuring some locals.  so since it interested me (and i dig the campaign).  i thought i’d share.  i have some nit-picks: if it’s ocean2ocean, why are they on the lake, it’s not the most scenic shots of our land… but it does seem somewhat ‘lifestyle’ and these boys do actually seem like they’d wear the clothing, plus it works for the activity, and so- here you are.  let me know what you think, if you care to, and thanks to nautica for including needle+thread in their mailing.  i didn’t receive anything in exchange for my post (missed my free umbrella by not being at the bainbridge ferry this morning- DUDE, i need a free umbrella!), i just thought it was a somewhat honest approach to a medium i usually find pesky.  plus, you know.  i like to feature the locals.

listen – day 2 – bumbershoot

wildly behind in getting these up… but better late than never.  i think i mentioned i had a great time at bumbershoot, and saw a lot of new (to me) and stellar bands.  biggest surprises- hey marseilles and the lonely h.  happy to see again- crash kings.  enjoy! for all the bands i saw on sunday, click Read more

listen – bumbershoot – day 1

every year i’m impressed by how well bumbershoot puts on an enormous show.  just like i have my favourite fashion-show-throwers, a music festival shouldn’t be a beating (*ahem*capitol hill).  you should know where the gate is, know where the stages are, know who’s doing what, when.  and although every year i’m a little put off by the crowds, i never once think, i wish this could be more seamless.  from the ease of press entrance, a badge being your ID, schedules that are pretty strictly adhered to.  it makes it easy to enjoy the music.  which is just what we did.  thanks for having us, and thanks for letting me capture some of the rock.  for all photos, click Read more

listen – rush – white river amphitheater

rush 2010 white river

first of all, for anyone who’s never been to white river amphitheater… give yourself more than 2 hours to get there.  actually, go ahead and give yourself 3.  pretend you’re driving to portland.  and while you’re at it, leave the concert early or you may never see your home again.

i exaggerate.  but seriously.  i gave myself what i thought was PLENTY of time to get there.  thanks to dagmar, i had pit access at an arena show.  i’ve never had pit access at an arena show.  i was excited.  and 10 minutes after the band was slated to go on, i was still in my car.  praying to whoever, wherever that i’d be able to get one song worth of photos.

i don’t have to give you all the drama.  i will say, rush gave an amazing performance.  my husband, who has been a DEVOTED rush fan for well over half his life, came back to the car giddy with excitement, and we talked the show most of the way home (40 minutes with no traffic).  i enjoy having these photos as a gift to give him, and recording one of his all time favourite bands. (for a rush review) for all the photos, click  Read more

day 1 – capitol hill block party – the first few hours

i was uber excited to see a few of the bands playing friday. like… jazzed.  so when i got there (after work), and the ‘will call’ line stretched two blocks, i waited.  then when my tickets were in the ‘guest list’ line… i tried to shake it off.  i was doing pretty well.  thinking… man, this is way better than i thought it’d be.  then, bang. no breathing room.  no moving room.  drunk people. elbows. and suddenly, i realized the photos weren’t worth it.  i liked the few bands i got to see. and having been to my share of music festivals, i am by no means, a baby.  i just think CHBP is still figuring it out.  should a photographer have to shove through over a block long area of people to get photos, and then… shove your way back out?  maybe.  but it detracts from the experience. everything i’ve been reading seems to show people are enjoying themselves… and the music.  i’ve seen a lot of amazing photos, and think maybe it’s just not my thing.  give me bumbershoot, wide open spaces, years of experience, and just around the corner.  for all of my CHBP photos, click Read more

listen – wax museum + old 97′s – showbox market

i do like a little twang.  kevin cole.  thursdays.  swingin doors.  so the old 97′s have been on my calendar since i noticed they were playing.  i don’t think i’ve seen them live (see: drunken nights in ballard?)… but know some of their songs.  actually, the deterrent to seeing them live, i think, was going to the tractor.  love ballard, but that place is a little… cramped?  their opening band (wax museum) was AMAZING.  so much so, that i wish the people sitting at the bar had been a little quieter.  hope you enjoy the photos… more after the jump. listen – she wants revenge – showbox sodo

she wants revenge seattle set list

i’m not so pleased with most of my photos from this show. but instead of being a whiny baby about it, i’ll just post them, forget about them, and remember hearing some of my favourite SWR songs live. the red lights are such a beating. i’m taking suggestions for how to deal with them.  for all the photos click Read more

listen – psychedelic furs – showbox sodo

this show has been on my calendar for AGES! i love she wants revenge, and was so excited to see they were opening for PHSYCHEDELIC FURS!! are you kidding me? although you undoubtedly know ‘pretty in pink’, i was excited to hear ‘heaven’ and ‘hearbeat’.  richard’s gravelly voice is killer and it was such a good show!

here’s my photos of the furs- for all of them, be sure to click Read more

listen – imogen heap – paramount – seattle

imogen heap seattle ben christophers

summer in my mind is synonymous with concerts.  i think of all the concerts i’ve attended over the 15 years i’ve lived up in the northwest… and there really isn’t a better melding of what i love about this area. outdoor music shows on the pier (remember those?), at the zoo… watching the sun slowly fade and hearing some of my favourite songs.  summer concert series are just getting going… this summer, i’ll try to hit a little of everything.  chateau st. michele is a favourite… what’s not to love about packing up food and blankets, buying a bottle of wine and listening to some a live band.  i’ve got shows picked through september, keep your fingers crossed i get in to some of the good ones!

first up… imogen heap.  last night imogen (and some of her very creative and talented musical buddies) played at the paramount.  heap’s first album since 05, ellipse came out last year, and she mentioned at last night’s performance that she has more musical intent (beyond albums) to offer us over the next few years.  i’m not a reviewer, but i enjoyed the live show immensely.  such a mix.  and i appreciated the effort to make each show unique to the town it’s being played.  she allowed fans to vote for songs to be performed, and after the performances, the songs will be sold with proceeds going to charity.

one of my favourite bits to her show- she came out to introduce each act (there were 3) that preceded her own… and hugged each performer as they came on stage.  she was also extremely animated, which made for lots of blurry photos, i didn’t mind… to see all of the photos, click Read more

supreme style – mike + ronald + ronald – emp – seattle

suit – sean – sam remix – seattle

if you’re a fan of harvey danger, ENJOY!  also, how rude is it to jump in to photos…? also, my husband thinks sean’s pose is reminiscent of elvis costello. i agree.

eagles – key arena – queen anne

i know who the eagles ARE. i know hotel california. actually, i know every word. i’m pretty sure don henley sings it. don’t write me if he doesn’t. do write me if you want to give me a free copy of their latest album, i did like the first 3 songs i heard at the concert. i couldn’t name the other members of the band, but i could google them (or ask my husband). he told me who each one was, and my moms pretty much screeched in my ear when they found out they’d be getting pictures. if you want to see them all (you’re an avid fan?) be sure to click Read more

florence and the machine – showbox market – seattle

florence and the machine seattle

i’m not sure what it was about this show.  i wanted to like it.  sometimes you’re just not in the right frame of mind?  i don’t know what my excuse was… but the reggae before and between sets didn’t help (i sometimes feel like the only person on earth who HATES reggae).  i’ll be giving this album (lungs) another listen, in the meantime, enjoy the photos

angels and airwaves – showbox sodo – south downtown

angels and airwaves, showbox sodo, seattle live music

the headliner for the night was angels and airwaves. showbox sodo was packed (all ages). i had a fun time walking the line, and although i don’t like asking minors for pictures, what was really interesting, was the unisex tee-skinny jean-cool kicks-hoodie uniform. i almost wished for an opportunity to do a group photo.  there was mixing it up… but very cool (to me) to see how pervasive it was.  thanks to after dark for sending me, hope you enjoy all the photos, click to Read more

say anything – showbox sodo – south downtown

say anything, max bemis
wednesday night i went down to showbox sodo and queued up for the angels and airwaves show. ok, actually i sat in my car and ate an apple and waited till the doors opened. it was cold, and the line was around the block.  first up- say anything.  to see all the pictures, be sure to click Read more
