nordstrom designer preview – making a dress – seattle

i’m never sure if it’s the designer or the style critic in me, maybe a combination of the two, but inevitably, i never find what i’m looking for to wear to events. this time around, i shopped all sorts of places- online, in-store, expensive, inexpensive, close-out, just-in… and still, didn’t see anything i’d consider.

it doesn’t help that i can see in my head exactly what i want. i’ve been consuming mad men, and joanie’s style has been calling. i have several vintage dresses that fit like a glove- my shape is now being defined as mid-century.  and so, of course, last minute, i decide to make something. inspiration: chanel, mad men.  timeline: 3 days.  here’s what i came up with.  to see all photos, click Read more

see – street entertainment – downtown seattle

i love being downtown for work. i love walking out to get coffee, walking from my bus stop to work… there’s just always something to see. i think on this afternoon i saw the bagpiper, this guy and a violinist. summer is alive downtown.  sometimes the best part is watching tourists interact with the live art…

matching set – endearment + dancer – downtown seattle

all these details, and i just noticed his shoes… i loved that she took her clothes apart and put them back together in such a cool way… i feel like when i see this, it usually, very much fits the person. for a back view click Read more

red carpet ball – making a gown – seattle

red carpet ball seattle

i sometimes tackle more than i can handle.  and in thinking about it, it’s not that i think i can’t handle it.  it’s simply forces working against me.  (or my inability to say no to something fun? hmmm…)

last week was a bit chaotic for me.  i knew i had several key things to get done.  i was attending events most days… and i thought… i want to make my own dress for one of those.  i know what goes in to making a dress.  i went to fashion design school.  i am a designer, and i know how to sew.  just bringing you up to speed on my skill level.  but i didn’t really factor in all the other commitments, and things started getting hairy about thursday.  then i fell down my front stairs, and i swear pandora was released.  for the rest of the story and photos, click Read more

do good – red carpet ball – w hotel – seattle

this weekend i’ll be working on making a dress for an up-coming charity event.  the lupus foundation has asked me to take pictures at their annual charity ball, and i want to make sure i’m appropriately attired.

it’s exciting to have a project.  picking a pattern, selecting fabric.  of course i’ve left it to the last minute (i work better under pressure anyway).  i have zillions of patterns and have picked a few to guide me in a direction… my inspiration is mostly vintage, and i’m really liking this 60′s full length look.  sort of julianne moore from ‘a single man’.

if you’d like to attend the ball, tickets are still available.  and of course i’ll be there to take your picture…

musical style – guy fantastico/nick – capitol hill

From needle+thread

i asked this gentleman’s name and with no pause, he said ‘guy fantastico!’. the ability to become who you want, even in something so small as an introduction… inspiring. guy made his t-shirt (applique monsters) and i loved the flower pinned to his jacket…

check back tomorrow for the start of the SAMRemix pictures…

rainy saturday – new cards – moo

From needle+thread

i remember the first person who handed me a moo card. it was at ballard artwalk about 3 years ago… and when i turned over this wee rectangle, there on the back, was his art. i loved it. i kept it. i still have it. let’s not digress into my hoarding… moo cards. since then, countless people have handed over these little physical representations of themselves, and i have to say, they give new meaning to the somewhat staid idea of ‘business card’. i’ve never personally liked having business cards, but when these showed up, with all (ok, not quite all) my favourite pictures on the back… i kind of squealed. want one?

andria of emerald city sightings says-

I could have done an entire photo shoot right then and there; but he happened to be working, so I settled for a few shots of his awesome over-alls. I stepped into this eclectic boutique in Soho and found Jean behind the counter. His patterned shirt and oh-so high-waisted overalls remind me of my youth, only he pulls it off way better. He had a quiet spirit and was extremely at home in front of the camera. Jean Sebastien. Bringin’ it back.
