sartorially speaking

if you love the sartorialist you can now peruse his great snaps on paper whenever the mood strikes you.  he blogged about it’s impending arrival back in january, and now you can pre-order the book on amazon.  looks like the cover shot is CITY editor julie ragolia as reported by refinery29 here.

seattle tradition – nordstrom anniversary sale

i rarely punctuate my year with retail. i mean, my week, sure. having worked at nordstrom for several years (clothing design, kidswear) anniversary was a special ‘season’ that we designed into. before working there, i didn’t know what it was. or what it meant to the inhabitants of the seattle area (i rarely wait outside a store at 5am, i was shocked to see HORDES in JULY). it’s part of the job for corporate employees to work today (and into the weekend if you’re really going for the gold star) in the stores. helping the sales team, restocking, ringing… ensuring the event is the best that it can be, and that each customer (think so many people you can’t walk a straight line anywhere) gets the customer service nordstrom is renowned for. i hope it goes well, anniversary for nordstrom can rival holiday. i looked at the book i received, and although i won’t be doing any shopping myself, i liked seeing that high end retail is paying attention. lots of accessories, smart price points… happy anniversary. sale.

the bigger picture – seattle p-i blog launches

i sometimes feel like this blog is quick and dirty.  i’m in, i get a picture, i’m out.  i’ve met a lot of really great people.  I’ve bugged a lot of really great people.  i’ve met people i want to grill about their fashion, but that isn’t what’s here… and so… i’ve created a second space.  something a little more in depth.  it’s been difficult to get people to commit to a little more time, i little more hassle, a little more of me in your face with a camera just a little bit longer, but i’m very pleased with the result.  thank you to tara at hazel salon (and also maria) for helping me get it going… stay tuned for a very lovely 3rd who will soon be joining their ranks.  i hope to post there weekly with a more in depth style bio.  fun !

seattle tradition – fremont solstice

so every year, there are a few events that encapsulate life in seattle (in my opinion).  i’ve made it to several of them on and off over the years, but solstice has become a tradition for our circle of friends, and every year that we participate is another year of memories here punctuated with this silly day of summer freedom.  if you’ve never been to solstice, or you’ve been but haven’t gone all out… i recommend it.  be silly, dress up… or… take it all off. anything goes for solstice.  this weeks photos are again from fremont, but during the fair.  i’ll be moving on to other areas in the coming weeks… hopefully hunting down diverse neighborhood style.  happy summer solstice !

a certain look

i started this blog, or actually, i could take it further back than that… the idea came to me for this blog, years ago.  i moved here from a place that is 180 degrees from seattle… we’ll call it… arizona.  when i moved here, i thought i’d found the place where i belonged.  my pale skin and independent spirit were a true fit in the northwest (maybe also east coast, but i’d never been, so couldn’t compare).  ANYWAY… on trips back home, and really anywhere else, when i was headed to the airport, and then my gate, i’d start seeing people who i thought were on their way back home to washington.  it was a game i played with myself… in head ‘i bet that guy lives in seattle’. i’d get to the gate, and he’d be there… in the late 90′s it was a grunge look, or what i’ll call ‘programmer’ (no offense, some of them have a look), sometimes just a woman who looked ‘seattle’.  i truly don’t know what it was, but i always felt like when i got to the gate, headed back to seattle… that i’d come to a group of my people, i recognized them.  seattle being small, there were a couple times… (usually vegas) where i’d see someone i knew. i love this city, and i love the people in it.  as i head to a distant land called texas for the week, i’ll look for my people when i hit the return gate home…

a study on individuality vs comformity

it’s almost odd to me how clicking through blogs and links and the internet you find some of the most truly amazing things.  i was looking at this blog and she had posted about these artists who document like minded (in dress) individuals. if you love seeing the way people dress, and have views on individuality, you can’t help but be astounded… to find extactitudes click here. (the one above is #80 yupstergirls NY 2006)

needle buzz

it’s been fun getting this blog going… since i’ve wanted to do something in this vein for years, i’m also very excited by recent activity (click here for online mention in seattle magazine !) and also a reader contributed spin off blog for the P-I (still trying to nail down some content).  check back- i’ll be back after the weekend with more sitings and style. enjoy this gorgeous weekend !

my favourite model

i wasn’t going to make anything about this blog very personal… but it’s hard in the day to day to not let it seep in…

this past weekend my much beloved pet passed away.  i never tired of turning my camera her way and snapping a few photos.  when she was young, as soon as i put the camera in front of my face, she’d charge me.  she didn’t like it when i pointed anything her way, and with a camera, you had to be quick (i have many a blurry photo of a kujo looking dog coming towards the camera).  as she got older, it was still hard to make her sit still… you’d have to catch her in those rare moments when she was completely relaxed (see: in the sun, or asleep) or completely bored with whatever the humans were doing (see: above).

it’s amazing all the little things a pet brings to your life.  it’s funny to think they adapt to our schedules, when in fact, it’s us to theirs.  i miss our morning shadowing… her following me to the coffee pot (to see if i also reach for a cookie) then into the bedroom to retrieve her bed (how many times a day did we move that bed !) then i’d follow her to her bed, to her bowl… to make sure she had what she needed as she settled in.

through the deaths i’ve already experienced… she was there with me to help me get through them.  you have to get out of bed to let her out, while out, she needed to run.  and really, you couldn’t help but smile to think… it just goes on for them.  they don’t care that you’re sad, or hurt, or flailing… they love you.  unconditionally.  to get through her death with empty space beside me… with no lolling tongue giving my cheek a lick… it’s truly one of the hardest things i’ve experienced.  i should be so lucky that the worst i’ve had so far is a dying pet.  it’s hard to see the silver lining.  the lining which of course is 13 years with a dog who technically had none.  sharing all that time with an animal who loved, gave, ran and retrieved.  made us laugh on many occasions; so many odd quirks and a mind that was quick.  she will be missed.  and loved… forever.

seattle style

ive lived in seattle for 9 years.  before that, i lived an hour and half north of here, and when i came to seattle, one of my favourite places to meander was the market.  even now, as a local, it never seems cliche’ to me to go there to connect to my city.  i never get tired of wandering there.  poking through new corners.  going a little further than i went last time.

a new goal has been to document some seattle fashion.  seattle is a land of individualists.  people who don’t conform to the rules of other cities.  it’s a joke that we wear fleeces and socks with sandals, and i won’t even argue with you, i own more fleece than i did when i lived in arizona.  and my tevas are beloved, although i would sooner set fire to hair than wear them with socks.  but i get it.

i want just a little bit of what my city looks like here.  from the man selling produce with the wicked style, to the girls walking around in herds starting the new grunge.  i love living here, and i’ve always loved people watching.  this is my way to connect to where i live and be inspired.
